Summer Decluttering in Lubbock: 7 Indoor Organizing Projects You Can Tackle When It’s Too Hot for the Garage
Let’s be honest: summer in Lubbock, Texas doesn’t exactly scream “deep clean the garage.” When it’s triple digits outside, the last thing anyone wants is to break a sweat organizing the attic, dragging bins out of the shed, or decluttering the garage.
But if the clutter is making you a little twitchy (or you just need a productive excuse to stay inside in the A/C), we’ve got you covered.
You don’t need to overhaul your whole house — just a few strategic wins that will leave you feeling lighter, clearer, and a little more in control of your space. Here's seven easy ways to declutter when it’s way too hot to tackle the outdoor areas.
Digital Decluttering Tips for Lubbock Families (from the Couch!)
You know what you can do from the comfort of your couch with a fan blowing directly on your face? Clear your digital clutter. This is one of those unseen areas that quietly, and quickly accumulate ALOT of clutter. Whether it's screenshots of a sourdough recipe you might try someday or 1,083 blurry photos courtesy of your toddler, digital clutter adds up fast. The best part? You can clear it out from the comfort of your couch (with full blast A/C and zero guilt).
To do this, I recommend a few main areas to focus on. First up, go through and delete old screenshots or blurry photos. Be honest with yourself - if you arent going to try out that recipe, delete the screenshot. Second, and my personal favorite! Unsubscribe from junk emails. Ill be honest - for as minimalist as I am, I have ALOT of emails from retailers with the latest sales, new products, or new restaurant openings (I see you Lubbock in the Loop). While a do love a sale or new coffee shop opening, there are alot of emails that I can unsubscribe from. My pro-tip would be to start in your inbox for any unread email that you can unsubscribe from. As you unsubscribe, search the person or retailer, and then mark as unread for all other emails that might be in your inbox. This will help prevent more future junk emails AND clear out emails that might be lingering in their that are older, but unread!
If you are on our email list, and choose to unsubscribe - no hard feelings, friend! BUT - if you arent on our email list, and want to be (dont worry, I promise we wont spam you!) you can join us here!
Next up, I would recommend tackling organizing your computer’s files. That ‘Downloads’ folder can get unruly. Dare I say - the digital version of a junk drawer…. Random files, duplicate PDFs, screenshots of who-knows-what, and that recipe you downloaded three times last week.
Here’s how to declutter the digtal junk drawer fast: Delete with confidence - old zoom recordings or chats, duplicates of images or screenshots, PDFs that have been filed, printed, or saved, or maybe those accidental bulk downloads from canva.. It was only supposed to be one graphic, not the whole file!
Now that you have decluttered, its time to organize! Having dedicated permanent folders with your “Go-to” items will help keep things sorted and easy to access! Here are some folders that might be needed: Receipts & invoices, Photos, Social Media content, Tax Documents, Resource / Reference docs, Contracts, or an “In Progress” folder.
It may not be as satisfying as a freshly folded linen closet, but clearing your digital clutter is one of the easiest ways to reset your space (and your brain!), without ever leaving the couch!
Declutter Your Junk Drawer in Under 15 Minutes (or Drawers, you know the one…)
This is a tiny project that gives major satisfaction vibes! Grab a trash bad and start decluttering! Things that you can toss immediately might be: dead batteries, pens that dont write, expired coupons, cords that you dont know what they go to, or things that just accidentally got thrown in there but dont actually belong.
Once youve gotten rid of all the trash, gather the remaining items and sort them by grouping like items together - pens with markers, sticky notes with not pads, screwdrivers with tape measure, cash with checkbooks or gift cards, etc. Once you have your groupings together, contain them by using small bins or dividers. You’ll thank yourself next time you’re digging for tape or scissors!
There are our favorites that we use on almost every project!
Tackle the Fridge and Pantry
Do you know what goes really well with fridge and pantry organization? Air conditioning, a podcast or audiobook, and a fabulous smelling candle lit and ready to go!
Heres where you should start: work in a left to right, top to bottom manner. Its like reading a book! This will give you a definitive start and stop point whether you are focusing on the fridge or the pantry.
Start by decluttering any expired or old food. In the pantry, check for things that might be stale or items that got opened and no longer good (even if they are still be in date). In the fridge, also check for expired or old foods, but also toss anything that might be bad - like salad dressing that is separated (when its not supposed to be), or the tomatoes that are growing vines throughout the fridge..
Once you’ve tossed all the old stuff, group like items together. Condiments with dressings, vegetables with fruit, cheese with butter, etc. In our house we also like to have a section for leftovers or take out foods so we know to prioritize eating that stuff first. This might also be the moment to wipe down shelves and drawers if they need it!
This area is an area that can be tackled quickly, and make a huge impact for the whole family!
Closet Decluttering Tips for Summer in LubbocK
Dont worry, we wont make you Marie Kondo your whole wardrobe right now, but this will help create space and organization for your closet for the things you will be wearing in this season into the next.
Start by looking through your items that are more Spring / Summer themed. Pull out anything that you havent worn, or attempted to wear this season. Check for things that are the incorrect size or unpleasant fabrics (Im talking to you, Ms. Microfiber-like swim cover-up!). This is also the time to look for anything with stains, holes, tears, piling, or discoloration. If you wouldnt pull it right now to wear to a last minute BBQ, toss it in the donate bag.
If you want a sure-fire way to tackle decluttering your closet, I have one strategy that works like a charm… Put on the clothes. Literally. Take a shower, get fresh and clean, and then put on every single item that is Spring or Summer related.
I am going to give you a preview of what likely will happen..
You are going to know instantly the items that fit. You are going to instantly know the items that are frumpy. You will know instantly the styles that no longer fit your lifestyle. And that makes decluttering alot easier than looking at it on a hanger, wondering when the last time was you wore it.
Once you have tackled that, edit the excess. You don’t need 12 black tank tops or 9 pairs of flip-flops. Keep your favorites, and let the duplicates go. Your future self (and laundry basket) will thank you.
Want a bonus tip? Keep a designated “donate” bag or bin in your closet all season long. That way, when you put something on and immediately want to take it off (you know the feeling), you can toss it in the bag and move on.
Car Organization Tips for Busy Families
If your car has become a rolling junk drawer with a steering wheel, you’re not alone. Between errand runs, road trips, school drop-offs, and drive-thru snack attacks, it doesn’t take much for your vehicle to turn into a clutter catch-all.
But here’s the thing: you spend a lot of time in your car. And whether you're commuting across Lubbock or just heading down the road to Target, your drive should feel like a reset — not a reminder of the chaos you’re trying to escape.
Here’s how to give your car a quick but impactful refresh (no detailing required)!
Clear out the obvious clutter. Start with the easy wins. Trash the receipts, empty water bottles, straw wrappers, and snack crumbs. Check the door pockets, console, under the seats — it all counts. And don’t forget the trunk! That bag of donations you meant to drop off in April? Let’s finally handle it.
Remove what doesnt belong. Think: shoes, jackets, coffee mugs, school papers, dog toys… If it has a home inside your house, take it there. Keep a small tote or collapsible bin handy for regular “bring it in” trips to make this part of your routine.
Pro Tip: If your car is your mobile office, consider a designated organizer for business supplies or samples so they stay contained and easy to grab.
Wipe it down and reset the essentials. A quick swipe with a microfiber cloth goes a long way. Wipe down your dashboard, console, and cupholders. Restock your glovebox and console with tissues or wet wipes, a pen and small notepad, travel-size sunscreen and hand sanitizer, extra sunglasses, a few granola bars or mints (yay for purse snacks!), and a mini trash bag or trash container.
Create a “Car Kit” That Works for You
This is where you elevate the experience. Depending on your lifestyle, your car kit might include:
Mom Mode: Diapers, wipes, snacks, extra clothes
Work Warrior: Business cards, product samples, notebook, charger
Weekend Adventurer: Picnic blanket, sunscreen, bug spray, Bluetooth speaker
A thoughtfully curated car kit isn’t just about being prepared — it’s about creating calm in the chaos. When life gets messy (and it will), having the right essentials within reach turns your car into a space that supports you, not stresses you. It’s a small shift with a big impact — and your future self will thank you at the next unexpected spill, tantrum, or Target haul.
Build it into your Weekly Reset. Once your car is cleaned out, the magic is in the maintenance. Make a 5-minute Sunday sweep part of your weekly reset. Trash what’s accumulated, restock the essentials, and start the week off fresh.
Because when your space feels calm — even your car — your brain gets to breathe a little easier too.
